Career Overview

The job of an IT executive is to oversee the information technology needs of an organization including supervising subordinates, coordinating software implementation and upgrades, determining IT budget and equipment needs, and ensuring systems security. Depending on the kind and size of the organization, IT executives may be core contributors to the overall business strategy and budgetary outline.

Education

Although this area of work is open to all graduates and those with an HND or foundation degree, the following subjects may improve your chances:

  • Computer Networking and Hardware;
  • Computer Science;
  • Computer Software development;
  • Information Technology;
  • Internet Engineering;
  • Software Engineering.
The above qualifications are not always required for this work, although some employers do prefer a degree or IT-related qualification. Employers also look for in-depth knowledge of the programs and applications they use, typically Microsoft, Linux and Cisco technologies.A postgraduate qualification is not necessary for entry to this career. However, Microsoft certification may give you an advantage. There are similarly recognised courses for Linux, Unix and Cisco. These are currently the most widely recognised technical certifications in the industry and are available at further education colleges and commercial training centres.

Important Qualities

Analytical skills. Computer hardware engineers analyze complex equipment to determine the best way to improve it.

Creativity. Computer hardware engineers design new types of information technology devices.

Critical-thinking skills. These engineers use logic and reasoning to clarify goals, examine assumptions, and identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions to problems.

Problem-solving skills. Computer hardware engineers identify complex problems in computer hardware, develop and evaluate possible solutions, and figure out the best way to implement them.

Speaking skills.Engineers often work on teams and must be able to communicate with other types of engineers as well as with nontechnical team members.
